The majority of the game is two player though. Campaign is 2 players most of the time. Like already said, sometimes it can be 4 players when you meet other players playing a different campaign. It's also possible that others join you as creatures trying to kill you. 2 players can join as creatures in certain parts of the game.
Honestly, unless you're playing with someone that already knows how to play the game it can get much worse in co-op. The enemy AI and setpieces become even more irratic. I do ultimately think it's a fun game but one needs to be willing to learn the mechanics of the game (And the game does a really really bad job at teaching anything.) and a
